Project Details: PhD researching the medieval settlement and wider landscape of the Hundred of Willey in northwest Bedfordshire (2018 – 2023)

Supervisors: Dr. Richard Jones and Professor Neil Christie

Research Overview:

The project aims to investigate the medieval landscape and settlement character of the Hundred of Willey, a collection of parishes in northwest Bedfordshire. It considers the formation and development of the settlements, field systems and wider landscape, as well as the Hundred itself. The study area exists within a highly transitional region, lying on the boundaries of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire, and across the watershed of the Rivers Great Ouse and Nene. There is therefore scope to assess the differing impacts of these human and physical landscape factors within the Hundred and its neighbours. The study acts as a larger scale continuation of an MSc dissertation focusing on a parish within the Hundred which was completed in 2016.
