MSRG Vice-President
Stuart Wrathmell has been involved in medieval settlement research since the late 1960s, when he supervised excavations at the deserted medieval village of West Whelpington, Northumberland, under the direction of Mike Jarrett.
In the 1980s he joined John Hurst’s excavations at the deserted village of Wharram Percy, North Yorkshire, supervising work on the post-medieval phases of settlement. He subsequently ran Wharram’s post-excavation analysis and publication project, which resulted in the publication of eight research volumes between 1989 and 2012.
His interests have extended from the structural evidence for medieval peasant houses and outbuildings, to patterns of rural settlement across England (explored in collaboration with Brian Roberts), and more recently to the impact of Scandinavian settlement in Yorkshire during the late ninth and early tenth centuries (published as a series of three articles in the Group’s Medieval Settlement Research journal). His current research focuses more widely on the formation of medieval farming communities between the seventh and twelfth centuries. Stuart served as the Group’s president during 2018-2020.
