MSRG Community Archaeology Representative
I have been interested in archaeology from an early age, taking part in a community dig in the 1970’s with my family. I studied archaeology at Durham, where Professor Rosemary Cramp was a formidable head of department. In my professional life I worked as a Primary school teacher, but always made time to include archaeology, history and local studies wherever possible.
As a volunteer at Ashwell Museum, and now as Assistant Curator, I have been able to engage with the local community and visitors to learn more about our past. We have a Neolithic henge, Iron Age hillfort, Roman temples, a deserted Medieval Village and unique plague graffiti in St Mary’s church as well as freshwater springs and part of the Icknield Way. It has been exciting to be part of test pitting projects, working with visiting schools and residents to understand more about our village. I am a firm believer in the value of community projects and bringing people together to further our understanding of, and enjoyment of the places where we live.
