Carenza Lewis MA ScD FSA FHEA is Professor of Public Understanding of Research at the University of Lincoln. Having grown up on a rural farm, she was taught by Chris Taylor at the University of Cambridge and was inspired by this to specialise in medieval rural settlement. She has remained active in this field throughout a diverse archaeological career which included 13 years as a presenter on Channel 4’s Time Team. Her work on rural settlements has included 13 years as an Investigator with the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England surveying deserted and shrunken settlements in western England, a research fellowship at the University of Birmingham looking at medieval settlement development in the east midlands, and 11 years at the University of Cambridge involving thousands of members of the public in test pit excavation within currently occupied rural settlements in eastern England.
