Andy is a senior lecturer in early medieval archaeology at Canterbury Christ Church University. Prior to this he worked in commercial archaeology and for Cardiff University. He studied for his PhD at Cardiff University (completed in 2010) where he specialized in the history and archaeology of the early medieval ‘Celtic’ west. His current research interests include: defended settlements and power in early medieval Wales, landscape and agrarian systems, and early Christianity in western Britain. He has published widely on these topics, including articles in Church Archaeology, Medieval Settlement Research, and Studia Celtica. He is currently directing a number research projects focused on south-east Wales, including a major re-evaluation of Dinas Powys hillfort.
